Gum recession is a condition that’s caused by the loss of gingival (gum) tissue around the roots of teeth. The more aggressive the recession becomes, the larger area of tooth that is exposed. Unfortunately, tooth roots don’t have the same protective layer of enamel over them. And as a result, they’re significantly more prone to issues like tooth decay and sensitivity. But most importantly, loss of gingival tissue can put you at a risk for tooth mobility and loss.

So, what can be done to treat the effects of gum recession? Soft tissue grafting. In other words, moving gingival tissues from one area to cover the area where they’re missing.

What if I Don’t Want to Get a Graft?

Unfortunately, gum tissue can’t just re-grow on its own. When we lose the original gingival cover over the roots of our teeth, it’s typically “gone for good.” The only exception is when we physically go in to reposition the tissues and cover the area all over again.

Although it’s always your individual choice to pursue a particular dental treatment, soft tissue grafting is one of the only methods that can save teeth with moderate to severe gum recession. Without it, receding gumlines weaken your smile overall.

Does Gum Grafting Hurt?

There are a few different types of soft tissue grafting methods. Depending on your oral anatomy and existing health, one may be better than another. Some — such as allografts — are completely non-invasive and require zero surgical procedures. Others become slightly more invasive, such as tugging on the tissue to guide it over another area or removing a graft from elsewhere in your mouth to move it to a particular tooth. Each has its advantages and varying level of comfort. Our Suffolk County dentists will clearly discuss the needs and expectations of each scenario as it fits your oral health.

Some grafting treatments do not even require local anesthetic (numbing medication) or sutures. The way each graft works is unique. And as such, you’ll be fully informed of all of your options before scheduling any necessary treatment. Your comfort is extremely important to us.

Is My Gum Graft Permanent?

Soft tissue grafts require the same gentle care and maintenance as your other oral tissues. Conditions like active gum disease, aggressive toothbrushing, or tobacco use could result in failure of your grafting treatment. But with proper home care, modified daily oral hygiene, and gentle handling of your gums post-surgery, the success rate is extremely high.
